Leaving Certificate Applied (L.C.A)

Leaving Certificate Applied is a two-year senior cycle programme aimed at preparing students for adult and working life through a mix of practical, academic, and personal development opportunities.
Unlike the traditional Leaving Certificate, LCA places a strong emphasis on real-life skills and is designed for students who prefer learning through practical experience.

Why Choose LCA?
Practical & Applied Learning: Subjects are taught through real-world applications, including work experience, enterprise projects, and community involvement. Continuous Assessment: Students are assessed throughout the two years, helping reduce exam pressure and encouraging consistent effort. Life Skills Focus: From communication and teamwork to problem-solving and time management, LCA equips students with essential skills for everyday life and the workplace.

LCA Subjects
Vocational Preparation and Work Experience English and Communication LCE Maths* Modern Languages; Irish (5th year), French (6th Year) Information and Communication Technology Social Education Arts Education; Art (5th Year), Music (6th Year) Hotel, Catering & Tourism Graphics & Construction Studies * Students will sit Leaving Certificate Established maths at Foundation, Ordinary or Higher level. This allows students to meet the minimum maths requirements in a range of trade courses.

Assessment
Continuous and Practical
Assessment in LCA is based on ongoing progress, not just final exams. Throughout 5th and 6th year, students build up credits.
Credits are earned through:
- 90% attendance & classroom assignments
-
Practical and project work
- Work experience reports
- Final exams in a small number of subjects

Over 90% of the course is assessed during the two years, reducing pressure and recognising consistent effort. Students can achieve a Pass, Merit, or Distinction, with credits awarded across modules and tasks.

Work Experience
Real Learning, Real Skills
Work experience is a core part of LCA, giving students valuable insight into the world of work.
Students attend work experience every Friday during term time, exploring areas such as retail, childcare, hospitality, construction, and more. Over the two years, they will have the chance to try different roles and industries. This develops practical, real-world skills, helps students explore career options and improves employability after school.

Pathways After LCA
Students who complete the LCA can progress to:
Further Education and Training (FETAC/QQI Level 5 courses), apprenticeships and traineeships,  or direct entry into the workforce.
At Patrician Presentation, we value each student’s individual strengths and support them in finding their own path. The LCA programme is an excellent option for students who learn best through hands-on experiences and are ready to engage with education in a more meaningful and practical way.
